Q: What is IAEM?

A: The International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to promoting the principles of emergency management and to representing professionals whose responsibility it is to save lives and protect property in disasters. Founded in 1952 as the U.S. Civil Defense Council, IAEM has transformed into an international organization that seeks to represent emergency management practitioners and students. Q: How do I join IAEM?

A: Any University of Akron student can join IAEM by paying their membership dues and submitting an application for membership to us. Click here for instructions on how to join.

Q: How much does IAEM membership cost?

A: Membership dues are currently $40.00 for students. Students must pay their dues to us when filling out an application either via OrgSync or by printing a copy (.pdf) from our website and contacting us to submit it. Students are advised not to complete the application at the national organization’s website (iaem.com); the UA chapter will complete this application on your behalf.

Q: What does IAEM do?

A: The UA chapter of IAEM has engaged in a number of activities over the past couple of years, including: apparel sales, candy sales, bowling nights, movie nights, and speakers. In the Fall semester, some of our members travel to the annual IAEM conference. During the Spring semester, IAEM typically takes a trip to the Ohio Emergency Management Agency (OEMA) and tours their facility in Columbus, Ohio.

Q: When does IAEM meet?

A: Our meeting times vary based on our active membership’s class and work schedules. For updated information about meetings and events, visit our events page.

Q: What is OrgSync?

A: OrgSync is like Facebook for student groups; it's a network developed specifically for student organiztions at colleges and universities. The system has a number of features that enables student groups to communicate with their members and track such things as events, contacts, and finances.

Q: How do I join OrgSync?

A: To register, visit www.orgsync.com and follow these instructions: Click on Register at the top, left of the page, select University of Akron from the drop-down menu, click on the green button that says, Click to Sign In with your Campus ID, sign in using your UA Net ID and password, follow the rest of the steps listed on this page: http://www.orgsync.com/getting-started/.

Once you register and complete your own profile, you’ll need to do the following to join IAEM:

Place your cursor over “Organizations” at the top and select “Add Organization/Search Your Community”
Search for “International Association of Emergency Managers” and click the Join button to the right.

Q: How do I unsubscribe from your e-mail list?

A: This depends on which e-mail list you wish to unsubscribe from.

To unsubscribe from the Google Groups listserv, follow the steps below.

1.) After logging into your UA e-mail account, click on "Groups" on the black menu at the top of the page.
2.) Click on "IAEM University of Akron" on the right under the "My Groups" section.
3.) Click on "Edit my membership" on the right-hand menu .
4.) Click the "Unsubscribe" button at the bottom right, under the "About this group" section.
