About Us

NASA’s Robotic Mining Competition is a university-level competition designed to engage and retain students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The challenge is for students to design and build a mining robot that can traverse the simulated Martian chaotic terrain, excavate valuable icy regolith deep below the Martian regolith and deposit it into a Collection Bin within 10 minutes. Teams are rated based on their mining performance in the area, systems engineering, a technical presentation, community outreach, and social media engagement. We encourage high levels of teamwork and communication in order to create a positive atmosphere where all members can grow. All majors are welcomed. Our team currently features 7 different disciplines ranging from engineering to biology. 



Seth Carpenter - President 
About Seth
I am a senior at the University of Akron, getting my bachelor in Computer Engineering. Freshman year, I joined the NASA robotic mining team and have enjoyed the opportunities and problems it has presented to me. Along with the robotics in my spare time I fill my time with outdoor activities such as sailing, hiking and biking. This keeps me active and in shape from the inactivity of sitting in classes or on the computer. I am now the President of the team utilizing my skills is team management.

Hunter Hykes - Software Lead

I am a junior studying Computer Engineering at the University of Akron, planning to specialize in digital and analog hardware. I am on the Electrical Subteam of the NASA Robotic Mining Competition Team, and I am also involved in the University of Akron Marching Band and Theta Chi Fraternity.

Sarah Kuchcinski - Electrical Lead 
About Sarah
I am a junior studying Electrical Engineering at the University of Akron. I am the electrical subteam lead for the NASA Robotic Mining Competition team. I joined this team to gain hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of engineering design, prototyping, manufacturing, and troubleshooting. When I graduate from Akron I hope to work in controls, automation, or robotics. In my free time I enjoy reading and community theater.

Gina Lanese - Vice President 
About Gina
I am a Junior at the University of Akron pursuing a dual degree in Computer Engineering and Music. I am the Vice President of the UA NASA Robotic Mining Competition team, where I participate as a member of the Electrical subteam. In addition to the Robotics team, I am also a member of the University of Akron Marching Band, the concert bands, and Tau Beta Sigma.

Shawn m Sharratt - Treasurer 
About Shawn
I joined the NASA RMC team because I enjoy robotics and anything to do with space. I am a 4th year biology student, I work on research in robotics biomimicry, growing plants in martian soil / terraforming mars, and also corrosion of implants in synovial fluid.

Andrew C Sharkey - Mechanical Lead 
About Andrew
I am a junior in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics double major. I am also the Mechanical Sub-team Officer on the UA NASA Robotics Mining Competition Design Team. I play video games during my free time.
